چکیده

Studies of the chemical alterations in muscle, associated with its activity, have been well summarized by Eggleton1", Meyerhof97, and Milroy"'0. Such summaries naturally include a discussion of only those substances which have been shown to take part in the metabolic changes. As the first demonstration of chemical change with muscle activity concerned the change of glycogen to lactic acid, it was natural that research should continue along that line. Embden, Griesbach and Schmitz23 observed an increase in the inorganic phosphate of muscle along with an increase in lactic acid. In studying the organic phosphoric acid compounds of muscle, Embden and Laquer24encountered adenine nucleotide and thus associated the non-protein nitrogenous constituents of muscle with the metabolism concerned with muscle contraction. Fiske and Subbarow"6 showed that much of the creatine of muscle is combined with phosphoric acid but the compound is very unstable. Other nitrogenous compounds of muscle have not yet been shown to be concerned with its intermediary metabolism, but their nearly unique occurrence in muscle, and the relatively high concentration of some, make it appear that they are also associated with the activities of this tissue. It is the purpose of this review to call attention to the best known of the nitrogenous constituents of muscle which have been isolated in pure crystalline form. All the basic compounds which have been isolated from muscle extract, creatine, purines, carnosine, anserine, carnitine and methylguanidine, have been obtained after the use of rather drastic chemical procedures. Protein is removed by boiling the weakly acid extract, which is then often evaporated in the air at 1000 C. Phosphotungstic acid, silver, mercury and lead salts, hydrogen sulfide and barium hydroxide are the reagents most commonly used in the isolations. The solutions are frequently heated and allowed to stand. On the other hand, the acidic compounds, creatine phosphoric acid and adenyl-pyrophosphoric acid, have been obtained with procedures especially designed to guard against decomposition of unstable compounds. Care has even been taken to use freshly excised resting

CHANGES IN NITROGENOUS EXTRACTIVES IN THE MUSCULAR TISSUE OF THE KING SALMON DURING THE FAST OF SPAWNING MIGRATION.* BY CARL H. GREENE.t

In the preceding paper by CharlesW. Greene the general changes in the composition of the muscles of the salmon during the fast of the spawning migration are presented. The question at once arises as to the transformations occurring in this catabolism of the muscle protoplasm. Since the time of Liebig a bewildering multitude of nitrogenous extractives has been isolated from muscular tissue. The ...

Effect of Extractives on Digestibility of Cellulose in Corn Stover with Liquid Hot Water Pretreatment

Many herbaceous lignocelluloses suitable for ethanol production have high extractives contents, such as some straws and corn stover. The high extractives content might affect pretreatment or enzymatic hydrolysis. In this study, extractives were removed from corn stover, and then extractives-free corn stover and ordinary corn stover were respectively pretreated using a liquid hot water (LHW) met...

Evaluation of Potential Antioxidant Activity of Leaves of Bauhinia Acuminate

The methanol extracts of leaves of Bauhinia acuminata (MESF) and their different fractions obtained from modified Kupchan partitioning method i.e. methanol, pet ether, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and aqueous soluble fractions were subjected to biological screening such as total phenolic content and antioxidant activity screening. The amount of total phenolic content differed in di...

Radial patterns of carbon isotopes in the xylem extractives and cellulose of Douglas-fir.

Heartwood extractives (nonstructural wood components) are believed to be formed from a combination of compounds present in the adjacent sapwood and materials imported from the phloem. The roles of local compounds and imported material in heartwood formation could have important implications for the wood quality of species having naturally durable wood. Stable isotope composition (delta(13)C) wa...

Determination of anserine, carnosine, and other histidine compounds in muscle extractives.

A recent renewal of interest in the muscle extractives carnosine (fi-alanylhistidine) and anserine” (&alanyl-l-methylhistidine) , their component imidazoyl amino acid,, q as well as 3-methylhistidine and the dipeptide homocarnosine (y-aminobutyrylhistidine) , may be noted (l4). The present paper deals with the determination of these dipeptides and the free imidazoyl amino acids in muscle. The m...
